About the Position:

National Grid is seeking a Consultant to help deliver on critical “strategy activation” projects for senior leaders. Projects involve external analysis (e.g., trends and best practices), internal analysis (e.g., business performance and key drivers), evaluation of key decision points (e.g., defining options and financial implications), and leveraging internal ways of working to drive change. The position reports directly to the Head of National Grid Internal Consultancy. In this role, the Consultant will enjoy extraordinary exposure to the senior leaders in National Grid Plc, working on diverse, challenging, and interesting problems to address highest priority issues. This will involve applying strategic frameworks and concepts to solve complex business problems, supporting project execution and change management of major business initiatives, and developing and evolving the operating model across our group of companies. The successful candidate will become a part of a high caliber team, consisting of experienced leaders from within National Grid and from leading external management consulting firms. This role offers excellent career development opportunities at National Grid, growing within the Internal Consultancy team or expanding into other functions and business units.

Position Responsibilities 
(including but not limited to):

  • Execute on assigned workstreams within strategy activation projects – help define scope of specific assignments, generate project hypothesis, lead underlying research and analysis, test and communicate findings, and work closely with clients and other team members to deliver actionable recommendations
  • Conduct external research, interviews, and benchmarking to identify opportunities and best practices
  • Conduct internal interviews, data collection and analysis as well as high level process mapping to build a “fact base” on current operations and identify financial/operational performance gaps
  • Write slides that “tell a story” for assigned workstreams, and deliver sections of presentations to the Internal Consultancy’s clients – business leaders across multiple areas of the company
  • Work closely with project teams – including both other Internal Consultancy team members and working groups within assigned projects – to develop robust insights and recommendations for consideration
  • Help build the Internal Consultancy practice - take ownership for continually improving consulting team performance

Knowledge & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from top-tier college or university
  • Typical candidates will be 0-2 years post-MBA/other relevant advanced degree, and/or have 6-10 years of work experience with a successful track record of solving complex business problems and increasing responsibility
  • At least 2 years of prior management consulting experience is strongly preferred
  • Prior experience in energy is preferred. Experience in “related” industries (e.g. other utilities, construction, engineering, distribution, defence, large business-to-business/industrial equipment) will also be considered a plus
  • Exposure to and success in delivering business strategy and operations improvement projects (e.g., strategy development and execution, operating model design, performance improvement)
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity; able to quickly break down problems in a structured manner and prioritize required analysis
  • Ability to analyze complex financial and industry data and draw out insights and implications
  • Ability to create simple, powerful, and data-driven written communications
  • Ability to effectively communicate with leaders and build enduring, trust based and high-impact relationships with clients to drive change
  • Professional, collaborative, respectful of different perspectives

The majority of the work will be executed out of the National Grid US Headquarters in Waltham, MA. Some travel will be required to our operations throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York, with the occasional trip to the UK (estimated once per year). While travel may fluctuate depending on particular assignments, it is estimated to average 10-15% of overall time.
