As a senior member of BMSC Finance Business Partnership (FBP) and the broader Global Finance team, the SVP, Controller - BMSC will have the responsibility of providing accounting and reporting transparency (including the design, implementation and monitoring of relevant internal control over financial reporting in accordance with SOX 404) across BMSC to include the Loyalty Program as well as other BMSC programs and services to ensure that they are reflected accurately (in accordance with GAAP) and consistently in Marriott’s financial statements. In addition, this position will partner with the Controller & Chief Accounting Officer to enable operational excellence of the business through the delivery of world-class and innovative end-to-end accounting and reporting processes.

Due to current business needs, the position will begin with a heightened focus on the Loyalty Program. Over time, the position will have increased controller responsibilities across the BMSC organization.

The SVP, Controller – BMSC will partner with the Accounting Policy, Financial Reporting & Analysis, other Global Finance and BMSC leaders as well as external parties including service providers design and implement processes and controls to ensure compliance with US GAAP and SOX 404. He/She must possess outstanding technical accounting, finance and analytics, and outstanding communication skills and be able to provide day-to-day leadership of the accounting and reporting for BMSC Programs and Services, including the Loyalty Program.

As part of FBP BMSC, and broader Global Finance team, this position will coordinate with and support multiple stakeholders including continent and corporate leadership and discipline teams and external stakeholders. She/he must be adept at tapping diverse sources of information, anticipating challenges, devising and executing breakthrough strategies/approaches to deliver against the current and future business priorities, and engaging and partnering with key business leaders and owners, thereby strengthening Marriott’s competitive advantage through excellence in financial management.

Expected Contributions:

  • Provide accounting, reporting and internal controls leadership of all BMSC programs and services (beginning with Loyalty in 2019).
  • Provide support to the Finance Business Partners in the development of P&L reporting and the Long-Range Planning process for Loyalty as a “separate business unit” from a financial reporting perspective.
    • Assume responsibility for all accounting aspects associated with the Loyalty Program. Overtime, this position will also have responsibility for the accounting, reporting and related internal controls for all programs and services within BMSC.
    • Lead the process improvement projects to ensure remediation and improvement of any control deficiencies identified.
  • Implement, document, maintain and monitor accounting policies and internal control procedures.
  • Partner closely with Accounting Policy, Financial Reporting & Analysis and other finance teams to ensure all BMSC programs and services are reflected in MI’s financials accurately and in accordance with GAAP.
  • Provide oversight to the 3rd party actuary to ensure the Deferred Revenue liability is appropriately calculated; develop Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to ensure vendor is meeting performance as per contract terms.
  • Support the business case work associated with the BMSC Programs and Services, including the annual budgeting process, the annual charge-out rate analysis, annual audits, owner and franchisee inquiries and all related reporting and financial controls.
  • Partner with various BMSC business groups to include but not limited to Loyalty program, IT and data analytics leaders to reevaluate and, where required, restructure the analytical resources, tools, methodologies, protocols, etc. for maximum effectiveness and accountability.
  • Partner with Global Finance Officer and other Finance FBPs to proactively forecast, monitor and measure the financial performance of the BMSC Programs and Services and develop actionable recommendations to address identified business challenges and opportunities.
  • Maintain strong relationships with BMSC business leaders, Global Finance leaders and other key stakeholders in order to effectively influence key business decisions and financial outcomes; optimize overall work effectiveness.
  • Support the development of and ensuring BMSC alignment with integrated approaches addressing the collective financial needs of Marriott; ensuring finance work priorities, roles, decision making protocols, etc., are understood and consistently applied.
  • Support/lead other global finance projects for the Controller & Chief Accounting Officer, as requested.
  • Champion leadership development and workforce planning priorities by personally assessing, selecting, retaining and developing diverse, high-caliber talent that can lead the organization today and strengthen the leadership bench for the future. Work with Human Resources to anticipate future talent needs based on business growth plans and allocates resources appropriately.


Candidate Profile:

  • Minimum 15+ years’ financial and accounting management experience in a global organization or public accounting firm with increasing management responsibility including complex accounting, data analysis and financial modeling; must have recent public accounting experience with exceptional GAAP and internal controls expertise.
  • Exhibits strong functional leadership and finance knowledge; able to leverage this strength to influence business team strategies and decisions.
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization, partnering with resources to achieve results through others.
  • Able to consistently make decisions in a timely manner sometimes with incomplete information and under tight deadlines and pressure. Comfortable challenging organizational norms and accepted thinking to improve effectiveness.
  • Able to orchestrate systemic change – initiates, supports and manages change within the organization, taking steps to remove barriers or to accelerate its pace.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills with proven understanding of economic valuation theories and processes; ability to take large volumes of complex information and present it in a clear and concise manner appropriate for senior management decision-making; uses data and a cogent problem-solving methodology in decision making and impact assessment.

Education and Professional Certification:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Finance, Accounting or related discipline required
  • Active CPA required
  • MBA or advance degree in finance preferred
