Stanford Management Company (SMC), a division of Stanford University, was established in 1991, and is responsible for managing the University’s endowment and trust assets and temporarily invested expendable funds. The majority of the University’s endowment assets are invested in a diversified portfolio of actively managed financial and real estate assets, deployed through external investment managers. There are also a number of separately invested portfolios with different objectives and mandates supporting specific schools and departments. This position will be instrumental in ensuring accurate reporting and ongoing monitoring of investment performance for these separately invested funds.

The Analyst will report to the Director of the School & Department Funds group and will work closely within a four-person team which manages separately invested portfolios supporting various schools and departments at Stanford University. The Analyst will require excellent analytical and organizational skills to execute and monitor the performance and valuation processes in support of investments in start-up companies and fund managers.


Education & experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and four years of relevant experience in investment accounting, investment operations, and/or performance measurement or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • High degree of accuracy, strong attention to detail, and efficient execution of tasks.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Excellent numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Highly motivated and works well under pressure.

Physical requirements:

  • Constantly sitting.
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely reach/work above shoulder.
